My Carcassi violin doesn’t care about borders. He’ll croon an Italian love song like he’s leaning out of a balcony in Naples. My Italian fiddle sings in the language of romance, even when the words are gone.
There’s something about Italian violin music — warm, lyrical, unapologetically emotional. When I play an Italian canzone, my Carcassi doesn’t just play the melody. He lives it. He doesn’t ask where the music comes from. He just sings it.
And when I’m on stage, my eyes can always find one face that speaks the actual language my fiddle is playing. That’s the spark I chase.
Seven thousand languages on Earth. But at the end of the day, it’s one language — human.
